Exploring the relationships between perceived neighborhood boundaries and street network orientation

The neighborhood is a core unit of analysis in urban research, planning, and policy-making. However, perceptual historical processes oftentimes result neighborhoods that are not tied to sub-urban jurisdictions. For instance, historic might lack official spatial definitions, hampering neighborhood-based tasks local offices. In this case, practitioners can benefit from readily available proxies, such as the street network. study, we conducted an exploratory combines mapping network modeling. By retrieving participants' sketched boundaries quantifying orientations polygons patterns, were able measure compare relationships between fabric perceived extents two Lisbon, Portugal. results provided insights for enhancing existing definitions non-official neighborhoods, outlining new districts well discussions about role form shaping people's perceptions.
